How to Winterize Windows for Wisconsin Winters

How to Winterize Windows for Wisconsin Winters

December 04, 2024

When Wisconsin’s winter sets in, the harsh temperatures can quickly expose any weakness in your windows. When you properly winterize windows, you maintain a warm, energy-efficient home. While quick fixes like caulking or weatherstripping may offer short-term relief, replacing inefficient windows is the only long-lasting solution. Here’s how to prepare your windows for winter and why Renewal by Andersen is the perfect choice for your window replacement project.

Identify Drafty Windows

The first step is to pinpoint problem areas when you winterize windows:

  • Feel for drafts: On a breezy day, run your hand along the window edges to detect airflow.
  • Inspect for gaps: Check for peeling caulk or cracks around the window frame that allow cold air to seep in.
  • Look for light leakage: Visible light around closed windows indicates air gaps that impact efficiency.

Address Condensation or Fog

Foggy windows aren’t just an annoyance—they indicate compromised performance:

  • Moisture between panes: This signals broken seals in multi-pane windows, reducing their insulating properties.
  • Interior condensation: Persistent interior moisture can lead to mold growth and structural damage if left unresolved.

Understand the Limits of Temporary Solutions

Temporary solutions like weatherstripping, caulking, and window film can reduce drafts, but they’re not permanent fixes:

  • Weatherstripping: Helps seal gaps but often wears down quickly in high-use areas.
  • Caulking: Effective for small cracks but cannot address deeper issues like broken frames or seals.
  • Window film: Adds insulation but doesn’t resolve structural problems or energy inefficiencies.

While these methods may offer short-term relief, they can’t compare to the performance and durability of replacement windows.

Ensure Proper Window Functionality

Windows that operate correctly are critical for comfort and energy savings:

  • Test locks: Windows should close securely and lock tightly to prevent heat loss.
  • Check for rattling: Frames that don’t sit snugly can create drafts and energy inefficiencies.
  • Ensure smooth operation: Sticking or warped windows might signal structural issues.

rary fixes like caulking, weatherstripping, or window film can help, they aren’t permanent solutions:

  • Weatherstripping: Effective for small gaps but prone to wear in high-traffic areas.
  • Caulking: Covers cracks but won’t resolve underlying structural problems.
  • Window film: Adds insulation but doesn’t fix frame or seal issues. For long-term protection, replacement windows are the superior choice.

Hear From Our Customers

I cant express how happy we are with choosing Andersen for our window installation. Our sales representative was knowledgeable with product and answered any questions we had without hesitation. I did also fill out a survey that was sent in an email, but sadly I failed to personally name the two gentlemen that performed the actual installation. Barrett and Francisco were our guys, and let me tell you, they were outstanding!!! They did Excellent work and were professional as well as efficient and made this a smooth, none evasive process for us. I strongly recommend this company and these installers to anyone in need of windows!!! My husband and I could not be more pleased we chose Andersen for replacing our windows!!!

Jason and Brett did an awesome job installing our doors. We had separate installers a month earlier for our windows who also did a fantastic job. They were all very professional and cleaned up almost better than the area looked before the installation! Since these were both jobs that took more than one day the installers were great at keeping us informed on the status of where the project was at along the way.

This was a great crew to work with. Both the original install manager we worked with (Jay) and the install team (Daniel, Mason, Tony, Ethan, and Jose). Everyone was very professional and knowledgable. They answered all my questions and the end result on the house is great. In 3 days they replaced an old bay window with a new bay window, a set of french doors on the patio with a sliding patio door, and our old front door with a new front door and storm door.
