Andersen’s First Environmental Product Declaration
Recently, Andersen Corporation has released its first Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for a Renewal by Andersen® double-hung window. This accompanies the release of its Product Category Rule (PRC), a joint effort with other leaders in the window industry.
PRC aims to increase transparency about the manufacturer’s efforts to reduce the environmental impact of a product. It also defines the scope in which life cycle assessments and EPDs are done. Certification systems in green building, including the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design rating system acknowledge and award the use of products with published EPD.
Andersen’s first EPD focuses on the cradle-to-gate lifecycle impacts of its Renewal by Andersen® double-hung window. This uses exclusive Fibrex® material for frames and insulated glass units. Fibrex consists of 40 percent clean, reclaimed wood fiber by weight. For its double-pane, insulated glass, Renewal by Andersen® uses an argon gas blend in the airspace and Low-E coatings for superior thermal efficiency.
